Updating Screen Time on your child’s device will depend on the version of Screen Time that you’re currently using.
Android
Google Play
If you installed Screen Time on your child’s device from the Google Play Store then you can update it from with the Google Play Store app on your child’s device. It would be best to have the Screen Time app auto updated so follow the steps below to do that:
- Open the Google Play Store app
- Tap Menu >> My apps & games
- Select the app you want to update
- Tap More
- Check the box next to “Auto-update.”
Or if you want to manually update or have all apps on the device auto update check out Google’s help page for more info.
Screen Time Website
If you installed Screen Time on your child’s device using the steps on this page, then the app will keep itself updated. Your child will get a pop up on their device, they will have to update in order to carry on using the device.
Check out our blog post about this feature for more info. You can force the app to check for an update. To see how to do that check out this short video.
Apple
Most Apple devices have automatic updates turned on by default, however you can check if the app on your kid’s device is up-to-date by:
- Open the Apple App Store
- Tap Updates in the menu at the bottom of the page
- If you see Screen Time in that list then you can tap update to get the latest version.

I’ve got screen time on and working but ‘messages’ text facilities disappeared?!

Hi Deb, are you using the Android version of Screen Time? If you are then you should be able to unblock Texting by unblocking the the Texting, Contacts and SIM Toolkit apps. If this doesn’t work for you then can you contact our support team using [email protected] please? And they’ll help you get this sorted out.

Also is there a way to block you tube on internet if you allow google chrome but dont allow you tube app? I blocked the you tube app through screentime but it seems if chrome app works they can still access it through internet…correct?

Sorry there isn’t a way to block specific content using Screen Time. So if you block the Youtube app then kids are able to access videos through Chrome if that’s not also blocked.

Each time I try to update I get an error message that says..unfortunately, screen time has stopped working…any suggestions. My son is running version 3.3.3 on his tablet

That’s weird. Can you try running the update in Safe Mode instead? Check out this page to see how to start the device in Safe Mode.
If that doesn’t work can you contact our support team please to see if we can look into this a bit deeper.

Hey Kyle, if you don’t have a camera on your child’s device then you can use this method to install Screen Time. Let me know how you get on with that.
